Hmm… part 7

Overheard at work.

Guy A: “Hey man, I hope you appreciate me doing this!”

Guy B: “Yeah lah! Yeah lah!”

Guy A: “You accompanied me for Slayer. I’m following you to watch Rick Price.”

Hmm… The world of difference...

Hell On Earth...

Got this picture off LinkMachineGo. These few days with low internet connectivity are really killing me. I think we are totally screwed without the use of technology. And the ironic thing was that I was discussing this with Tobey, Jean's friend whom I've met on Christmas Day at her place.

Fantastic 4 2: Rise Of The Silver Surfer

Got the trailer link from Chee Ken.

Looks good to me. The Silver Surfer looks a little too CGI for me but I like the silent gliding bit. Chris Evans still proves he is the best choice for the Human Torch. And of course, I <3 Jessica Alba.

What constitutes democracy?

I've no fucken idea as well... But here's the song done by The Lard Brothers with Max on vocals.

Let us know your thoughts.

The Lard Brothers' gonna work it out!!!

We had a massive MrMisse (an internet forum which Yeeyong's customers gather online) gathering at Aston's, a restaurant opposite Katong Mall. Ed the Tech Guy brought his home brew as well.

Here's my S$38.50 (nett) Wagyu beef steak. Worth it.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The place was recommended by Ian Tang, bassist of Super Illegals. Bryan, Ian Ho, Kinho, Hakim, Iliyas, Ed the Tech Guy and Robin all turned up and made sure that cows are an endangered species from now onwards.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Ian Tang demostrating how much he loves the beef. Hakim who cannot take it at the back. The beef is that good.

We are preparing for our maiden show at the Arts House this Saturday 30 December, playing with guitar improv duo, TBFKAS (which Bryan plays in and strangely, Yeeyong is going to play keyboards and acoustic guitar this time round). Ian is helping us out on bass.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Ian demostrating why he's a Lard Brother.

We have finally finished the mix for 'Democracy' which Max sang vocals on. We should be uploading it on our MySpace page very soon. I'm finishing up one demo which I'm thinking if we should still get Max to sing on it or should we buy Jane shitloads of drinks and ask her instead? Hmmm...

Anyway, Weiyuan's new mixing desk. It's going to be a lotta fun in the next few months...

Mansun - Wide Open Space/ Stripper Vicar (live)

Though I love the band, they seem pretty alright live, not excellent. Well, this is probably earlier in their career. God, guitarist Dominic Chad has really ugly teeth...

The Verve

If you read Max's blog, he often pays tribute to bands he loves by showcasing a series of their videos streamed by YouTube. Well, I thought I'd chip in as well.

The Verve - Slide Away

This is off the debut LP A Storm In Heaven. I love this song. The video captures the band in their early days with their hippie look. They probably thought they were Pink Floyd or something. Check out the video. Bassist Simon Jones's probably still the coolest one among all of them. What happened to him after the breaking up of The Shining? Anyhow, guitarist Nick McCabe still rocks though...

The Verve - Star Sail (live)

This is off their debut LP as well.

The Verve - On Your Own

Off their 2nd full-length A Northern Soul. I love this track cause I can play it. Heh.

The Verve - This Is Music

Still off the 2nd LP.

The Verve - The Drugs Don't Work (live)

By the time, the 3rd album Urban Hymns was out, they've totally lost their previous ambient/ shoegazer edge and became very much roots-rock like many of their peers Catherine Wheel and Ride. But what Dick Ashcroft had stronger than his contemporaries was his songwriting skills and he HAD them in spades. This album marked the last of his good work. His first solo album was decent. The following 2 were pretty bad...

The Verve - A Man Called Sun (live)

This is super old skool as the tune is from their debut self-titled EP. Love the groove.

Still Spanking The Monkey Good

Yes, being the self-indulgent fuckers we are, we're throwing yet another show for us to "spank our monkeys", Still Spanking The Monkey Good, a sequel to last year's We Spanked The Monkey Good. Yeah, we are probably gonna do it as a trilogy with the final one next year. Ha!

This is the first outing for The Lard Brothers as a live unit. We are asking our friend-in-lard, Ian Tang to help us on bass. Max might be performing with us. We don't know yet as we haven't had a single rehearsal yet! 12 days to the show and totally unprepared. FUBAR, indeed! Hmm, still deciding if we should cover a George Michael song...

And I've to rush off to help out at a wedding on the very same day!

In any case, Haykal and Sirraj will be performing as well as Terence and Marc.

A-Ha - Take On Me (live)

I've this video stashed away somewhere. I've always loved this tune. The band performs this live at Live8 Berlin but singer Morten Harket looks like he just came to attend a picnic. Hmm... but how the fuck is he still able to hit those hit notes?!?!

Max has a couple of their videos posted here and some pictures of Britney's bald beaver there as well.

Tissue paper

Girls are very amazed that I as a guy carries tissue papers around. But no one really knows how important a packet of tissues is and how it can save lives in times of emergencies.

I was having a chat with Ed The Tech Guy on my mobile while taking a crap. We were talking about going to this place to eat copious amounts of beef. And I realised...

"Fuck, Edwin! There's no toilet paper in the cubicle!

"Luckily, I've got tissue paper on me!"

Eating chicken

Chicken is one of my favourite meat. Who the hell am I kidding? I love meat! So I’d take them all!

Anyway, I was ravaging a chicken drumstick when my sister came up to me.

Sis: “You know you shouldn’t eat too much chicken, especially if you are a guy.”

Me: “Why? I love chicken!”

Sis: “They’ve been injecting estrogen into chickens so that they can have more breast meat. Eat more, you’ve more estrogen and you’d get man-boobs.”

Fuck.

Guest vocalists

The Lard Brothers are currently shopping around for guest vocalists ala our good friends in Phorous. Do let us know if you are keen to work with us on our original material and send some love. Thanks!

Spiritualized - Broken Heart (live)

My favourite Spiritualized tune. Probably, I could relate very much to it... Yeeyong was telling me to check out the live clips for Jason Spaceman and his merry band of astronauts.

Here's another.

Drinking binge

Went out with Edwin, Gim, Chung, Roy and Kevin last month. Insane amount of drinking every Saturday. Got home after 6am for every party. The number of Martell bottles they open is insane… but all good fun!

MOS on Saturday 18 November:

Edwin (at the back), Kevin, Lip Peow (who’s back from Bangkok for the weekend), Chung, Roy and me at da bottom.

Showing the love…

Gim "Kong Ba Bao" Lim’s in the one in the middle

Kevin and his girlfriend, Yoyo. Somehow, I think they are made for each other…

Zouk on Saturday 25 November:

Andre and me

Gim, Shirana (the piranha) and Esther

This is madness…

Fucker’s acting cute again…

The love, muthafuckas, the LUUURRRVVVVVEEEEE…

This is sweet…

That’s just kinky…

This’s just plain sick…

My finger after Chung slammed the car door on it as we were going for supper.

He tries to make up for it…

Tears For Fears - Shout

Robin and Randolf asked me once if I were a Tears For Fears fan. I said I only knew 3 of their songs: 'Everybody Wants To Rule The World', 'Sowing The Seeds Of Love' and this one. But I love this song...

Blondie - Rapture

Never really heard Blondie before. The video's pretty hilarious. but I dig the song's reference to Chic.

The Clash - Train In Vain (live)

Not too sure if this is the original line-up though... Hmm... But Tony Blair has his go at 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go?' here.

Vertigo Comics' 'Preacher' is going to be adapted as an one-hour HBO TV series. Read more about it here.

Life Without Dreams

Fuzz, Eswandy and Daniel Lim's band. It's pretty much a side project for all of them. They have this song 'Magnhild' for download on the right. I call it "Fuzz's chee hong song". He sings on it, wearing his David Sylvian influences proud. But you could disturb him and tell him right in his face that the song sounds like Starsailor!

Check out their MySpace page for more tunes.

Straight guys who love music by gay guys...

Last night at the final Bar None Monday Session (as in really, the end. No more.), Bryan "Man of wise words" Goh, Billy "I don't get shit" Tan and I were talking.

Billy had an idea to set up a new blog for music reviews. However, the twist would be we'd only cover music by gay men. And he'd ask Seng "President of the Anti-Blogging Movement" Woeiyuan to contribute as well.

Seriously, I was skeptical lah. I mean, how many good gay artistes are they out there? Billy mentioned we can cover Scissor Sisters, George Michael and Pet Shop Boys. Well, it piqued my interest but I was still slightly unconvinced. Then I remembered and mentioned, "Hey, we can cover REM, Rufus Wainwright and Judas fucken Priest!!!" Yes, singer Robert Halford is gay. 'Breaking the law', indeed!

This is going to be good. So we are all just waiting for Billy to start the blog which is "Straight guys who love music by gay guys...".

In other news, I, the President of the Anti-non-DJ Association", have been invited by Sujin to be a non-DJ at Coccolatte on Friday 8 December 2006. So I think I should go in as the moniker DJ Straight-hearts-Gay and press play on the tracks by my favourite gay artistes. I wonder if I should play some Kylie?

Lied - Sexyback

Adlin of Lied told me last week that they were playing for an all-boy's school prom. And they were going to cover Justin Timberlake's 'Sexyback'

Here you are. Download it ASAP!!! I love these guys! Good friends but like what Morrissey said before, "You hate it when your friends do it better than you..." I wanted to cover this song but is beaten to it by Lied. Looks like I've to bring out Beyonce's 'Crazy In Love'.

And the Lied boys would be coming down next January to perform. Of course, I requested that they play this and I do the Timberland parts. Heh.

Confession Of Pain

The synopsis:

In a city of love and prosperity, a city of lost hope and premature death, veteran detective Hei (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai) feels it all: the hurt, the helplessness, the horror. When his father-in-law, the billionaire benefactor Chau, is gruesomely murdered in his palatial mansion, he enlists the assistance of his former partner turned private detective, Bong (Takeshi Kaneshiro).

On the surface, the murder smacks of a vendetta that has taken a lifetime to fulfill. But no sooner has Bong agreed to crack the case with Hei than he realizes nothing is what it appears to be. Undoubtedly, they are after a monster in a perfect crime: every detail was meticulously orchestrated, every motive conveniently justifiable, and every culprit and potential witness mysteriously eliminated.

But Bong has his own demon to fight. Ever since the suicide of his pregnant girlfriend, he has lost his joie de vivre, even though he still retains the finest instincts of a man hunter. As he digs deeper and deeper into the case, all evidence seems to point to Chau’s daughter and Hei’s hysterical wife, Susan. But then the killer ups the ante by murdering Susan as well. Bong starts grappling with the suspicion that the man they hunt is someone very close to them, someone on the verge of a total breakdown.

Like lost souls in a city of fallen angels, the cop, the private detective, and the killer are doing what they must. Every step of their journey takes them closer and closer to one another, until a shocking denouement in which no stone is left unturned and no one can escape unscathed.

Repeat, this is not a date movie. If anything, it's prolly a chick or dick flick, depending on the group you watch it with. I mean, are you sure you wanna bring a girl to watch a movie where she spends the next 90 minutes drooling over the 2 male leads while you are trying to make out with her in the cinemas? I guess not.

The trailer is here. The movie opens on 28 December and the official site is here. Just don't read the official Mandarin synopsis. It practically gives away the ending.

Serene and Jay-S

Went to have a great seafood dinner with Jay-S (the gangsta rapper formerly known as Jason Siau), his biatch Serene and Maggie to this small Johorean village near the 2nd Link. We've got played out by Billy in the end. It wasn't cheap though. RM55 each but I, for one, was pretty happy that we made all crusteans a little bit more endangered...

Can't wait for a 2nd round...

Her Ass Is Righteous

After Weiyuan and Yeeyong mentioned to me that I’ve not run the 'Her Hair Is Righteous' thing for some time. So here we are.

Reon Kadena.

According to Wikipedia,

Reon Kadena (かでなれおん Kadena Reon?), also known as Kadena Leon or Minamo Kusano, (born February 19, 1986) is a Japanese model and actress. Kadena is a female Japanese idol who is distinguished by her innocent appearance and large breasts.

Earlier in her career she did nude photoshoots, but since becoming more famous she no longer does nude photoshoots or videos. Her current videos and photobooks largely feature her in costumes, bikinis or lingerie.

But I’m sure many of you guys out there are very familiar with her body of work, (Haha, I kill myself…) especially my good friend whose name is very similar to mine. Just that his starts with a ‘B’.

Topher Grace on Venom

Hmm...

Everyone loves MySpace. Well, almost, lah.

So as some of you guys might know. I oversee like 3 bloody accounts, Aging Youth’s, The Lard Brothers’ and The Love Experiment’s. Interestingly, I’ve gotten an add friend request recently from this local band The Question Fades. This is their site. And I click on it to see who the hell they are and what they play. So the music genre is Christian and rock. So I rolled my eyes and read through the bio. More eye-rolling. Sorry, doodes, Christian rock and me are mutually exclusive subsets.

Then they said on their bio that it was an all-girl band. Wooo… interesting.

So I clicked on their pictures to take a look and saw this and this. They were all in their CHIJ uniforms cause they have to wear it every morning!!! As some of you might know, I’m quite partial to the uniform since I’ve worn it last year for Halloween.

Somehow, I feel slightly guilty for adding them. I’m not sure if you guys’ve been to The Love Experiment’s MySpace page but take a look at our Top 8 Friends.

I feel like I’m corrupting the young… Sigh. Just when I’ve so many friends who are paid monthly to do that as an occupation.

Star Wars: Fix You

Got this off Billy too. A mash-up of Coldplay and Star Wars. A TV advert for an upcoming Star Wars marathon. It just shows how brilliant a man George Lucas was 30 years ago and how much he has fallen since then...

Shows…

Not feeling too well. Running nose and feeling slightly feverish. Must be the late nights I’ve been keeping these days.

Workplace is being fumigated and there’s like a thick layer of smog… Making me feel worse.

In any case, some of our friends (yeah, I can count them with just one hand) have asked about The Love Experiment’s album. It seems to me that it’d be placed on hold yet again. Sigh… But it’s just as well. Not that anyone really gives a shit anyway.

On a brighter note, The Lard Brothers are almost done with the first track ‘Democracy’ with me and Max recording his vocals overnight at his place. I think we’d need one more set of vocals and we should be done. We started a little on the George Michael tribute song ‘Monster’. Max was guffawing all the way, “This sounds like a gay anthem…” Should be good. I hope we can sell the song to Georgie

Supercar - White Surf Style 5

Joe Foo keeps sending me weird videos from this Japanese band Supercar. The music's pretty decent but not groundbreaking (Who is, these days, anyway?). But their videos are pretty kick-ass...

The Album Leaf - Always For You

I love the band. Any acts using the Fender Rhodes and Mellotron. I is hearts big time!!!

Friday, November 03, 2006

Hmm…

I’ve just noticed this. The hit counter rate is actually quite high. I’ve about 120 – 150 unique hits a day for this blog. So I’m thinking in terms of sales strategies. You call up 10 guys for an appointment, 3 would be interested to meet up and only 1 would take up the offer. So it’s a great opportunity for me to slut certain things to the masses if you'd consider 120 -150 people the masses.

1) Based on the abovementioned sales strategy, only 10% will take up the offer. So I’d see at least 12 of your asses next Monday at Bar None for The Love Experiment’s show.

2) If every reader were to contribute 10 cents to me on a daily basis, that’d be around SGD3.00 a month from each of you guys. 150 x SGD3.00 = SGD450.00. Which is quite a bit of money. These are the few options which I can spend the money on.

a. Taking more girls on more expensive dates. Oi, you at the back, stop sniggering. I saw that!

b. Get more gear. I’m thinking of getting a 41 key MIDI keyboard controller. Do I know how to play the keyboards? HELL NO!!! Would playing and serenading a chick with Coldplay’s ‘The Scientist’ score you immense brownie points with her? HELL YES!!!

c. If not, there is always other gear to get on a monthly basis. I need a new guitar amplifier for starters.

Okay kids, let’s get this ‘Donate 10cents daily to the Evil Lair’ fund thing started already!!!

Brett Anderson and Suede

Brett Anderson - Scorpio Rising

Got it from Billy. Apparently, he's releasing his solo album, (imaginatively titled) Brett Anderson. It was a pity that The Tears didn't live up to the hype...

Here's one of my favourite Suede song 'Europe Is My Playground' which was from the post-Bernard Butler and was co-written with bassist Mat Osman. Gotta love replacement guitarist Richard Oakes' e-Bow parts...

The Love Experiment @ Bar None

Click on image to see the full image

We'd be playing at Bar None on Monday 6 November at 9pm. We'll be playing with ETC and our good friends Fishtank. Drop by and say hi. This will be our last show of the year before we go up deep into the mountains (probably, just Bukit Timah) and find a sifu with long flowing white beard to impart us new songwriting skills. These songwriting skills will prep us for our 3 shows next year in January.

Google vs. YouTube

Film Threat ran an article about Google buying over YouTube. Okay, Film Threat is not exactly like the expert in the whole corporate takeover business. In any case, I was reading an Forbes article about the founders of YouTube Chad Hurley and Steven Chen and the rise of the video sharing phenomenon. There was that Forbes 400 as well which states Google's Sergey Brin and Larry Page as the No. 12 and No. 13 richest men in America. All from setting up a search engine. Gawd... Cannot take it.

And of course, there's that tasteful article about a very distasteful man Donald Trump. His daughter Ivanka's pretty hot though...

What I did over the past weekend...

Last Friday, I was out attending Huixian’s company’s anniversary party with some friends. They threw it at Top 5 which is situated at Orchard Towers. Yes, the Four Floors of Whores. I love that name! Damn catchy! Pretty interesting place. For once, the male topless dancers looked a hell lot better than the female pole dancers which looked like Filipino maids. Quite an ugly sight. Here’s a photo of the pole and some dancers. Some of Huixian’s coleeagues started humping the poles as well.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The stage looks like a mini-MediaCorps production with a LED backdrop. Nice. I like that. The entertainment was more cabaret like with people dancing. Pretty interesting and different from my usual fare of bands and DJ music. A very much welcomed change. Had to rush back to work.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Leslie of The Observatory had his acoustic album launch on Saturday at The Arts House. Was there with Ian, Sujin, Yeeyong, Fuzz, Weiyuan and Bryan. Met Adlin who was there for some work stuff. It was nice to see him but he hardly has any time for us when he’s in town. Boo hoo…

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

In any case, it’s pretty inspiring. I think everyone should release their own solo acoustic albums as well! Heh...

Documentary In Amber

They've finally placed a track on their MySpace page here. Great guys and certainly a more "happy shiny bunch of people" since they booted their old guitarist out. The new dude Dakai is a hoot. However, all their band photos are shrouded in shadows and all. What's up with these post rockers dudes? Seriously...

Stompcast gig pictures

More more pictures from Tim who came down last night. Thanks a bunch, dude!

The gig was pretty bad actually. The stage level for the laptop was insanely loud. I was so paranoid that the sound would be thrown out to the audience. Anyhow, when I started fucking up in the first song, the whole thing just went downhill for me. I could literally feel my balls shrinking. I was just glad that the whole thing was over. It was nice that many people recognised the cover of Humpback Oak's 'Circling Sqaure' though I screwed it up.

But our friends were nice and gave us 'friendly friend' comments. Well, the video should be coming out soon. Gawd help us all...

furniture's Ronnie's side project. Apparently, they all performed in baju kurungs and do noise rock. During Medeka Day (Malaysia's National Day), they were the invited guest band at Adlin's house party. These crazy Malaysians... What will they think of next?!
